Alright, while at home, I started to really listen to the styles of speech of the people living with me. My grandma has a strong New York accent. This shows more apparently with similar words. For example: "I'm gonna go and get a cup of coffee" (pronounced caw-fee), or "Could ya get me a glass of water?" Even though different letters are used, the first syllables of both of those words sound exactly the same when my grandma says them. My cousin has a tendency to use abbreviations and cut off his words, for example, "I'm bout to go to work". He also combines words: "Nah'm sayin'?", as opposed to "know what I'm saying?"
While on campus, there many different styles of speech. In the area that I was, there was a group of students at a table next to me in the food court. Most of them had the same general style of speech, but there was one that stood out. He had a very strong spanish accent. "Look what you did" was said as "loo wha you deed". I also noticed that on some words, he would pronounce the letter 'u' almost like an 'o': "I'm hongry" and "he ponched him in the face" are a few examples of this.
